Cristiano Ronaldo, 15 goals from 1,000: when he gets there, read with ten Moneyball methods
By Moneyball Editorial · published

Cristiano Ronaldo is on 985 official goals. 15 more and he is the first man to 1,000. At 41, with Al Nassr (2nd in the Saudi Pro League), he has 8 league goals in 10 matches this season. The countdown has started; the question is how long it lasts.
No number in football has been chased so publicly for so long. Ronaldo has talked about 1,000 for years, and every goal now is counted twice: once on the scoreboard, once on the way to the record. Moneyball does not do sentiment, so this column does the countdown the way a model would: how fast is he scoring, are the goals backed by chances, and how many matches does that leave?
1. The season so far
| Saudi Pro League 2026/27 | Figure |
|---|---|
| Matches (starts) | 10 (10) |
| Minutes | 784 |
| Goals | 8 |
| Assists | 1 |
| Expected goals (xG) | 6.59 |
| Goals minus xG | +1.4 |
| Shots | 37 |
| Goals per 90 | 0.92 |
| Match rating | 7.42 |
0.92 goals every 90 minutes from 0.76 xG per 90. His goals match his chances almost exactly. His goals are 29% of Al Nassr's league total.
2. The Saudi Pro League's scorers
| # | Player | Club | Goals |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ivan Toney | Al Ahli | 13 |
| 2 | Tijjani Reijnders | Al-Qadsiah | 8 |
| 3 | Cristiano Ronaldo | Al Nassr | 8 |
| 4 | Youssef En-Nesyri | Al Ittihad | 7 |
| 5 | Mateo Retegui | Al-Qadsiah | 7 |
| 6 | Alexandre Lacazette | NEOM SC | 7 |
| 7 | George Ilenikhena | Al Ittihad | 6 |
| 8 | Gabriel Martinelli | Al Hilal | 6 |
He is 3rd, behind Ivan Toney, Tijjani Reijnders. At 41, among strikers half his age, that is the remarkable part.
3. The countdown: a Poisson projection
Goals arrive like rain: at a steady rate, in no fixed order. That is a Poisson process, the same model behind our Match Board. At his scoring rate this season (0.80 league goals a match, about 78 minutes a match) he needs about 19 more matches to score 15; at the rate his chances deserve (0.66 xG a match), about 23.
Al Nassr have 23 league matches left this season. The chance he scores 15 or more in them: 82% at his goal rate, 55% at his xG rate. On the numbers, 1,000 comes this season. Goals for Portugal, in the King's Cup and in Asia count toward the 1,000 too, so this league-only projection is the slow version.
4. What Moneyball Scout makes of a 41-year-old striker
Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, plays as a centre-forward for Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League. Strongest for his role in expected goals and shots. Weakest in duels won. Scouting's score is the hard view: every figure his role needs, as a percentile against centre-forwards across 16 leagues, with the Saudi Pro League read at its level against Europe's.
| Scouting Players Research | Cristiano Ronaldo |
|---|---|
| Role and type | Centre-forward, poacher |
| Moneyball Score (league and European cups, adjusted for strength) | 34 |
| Rank among the centre-forwards of 16 leagues | 674th of 1150 |
| Rank among the centre-forwards of his league | 4th of 37 |
| Moneyball Value (estimate) | Under €0.5M (age and league) |
| Age curve: score in 1, 2, 3, 4 years | 30 · 26 · 22 · 18 |
| What Scouting weighs for his role | Percentile among centre-forwards |
|---|---|
| Expected goals | 84th |
| Goals | 79th |
| Shots | 81st |
| Shot quality (xG per shot) | 70th |
| Aerial duels won | 2nd |
| Shots on target | 48th |
| Duels won | 0th |
| Key passes | 6th |
The players most like him
| Most like him in Scouting | Club | Similarity |
|---|---|---|
| Paris Brunner | Monaco | 85% |
| Gift Orban | Amed SK | 85% |
| Casper Tengstedt | Toulouse | 84% |
| Ricardo Pepi | PSV | 84% |
| Dušan Vlahović | Beşiktaş | 83% |
A score of 34 is the honest gap between a finisher and a complete forward: Ronaldo now does one thing, and does it better than almost anyone, but he presses little, creates little for others and plays in a league Scouting reads well below Europe's best. The score is not a verdict on the goals; it is a reminder of how specialised the goals have become.
5. Why it still matters
Records are not won by models, and Ronaldo's career has spent twenty years proving models wrong. What the numbers add is the shape of the run-in: a striker scoring at about 0.80 a match, backed by 0.76 xG per 90, with 15 to go. On that pace, the 1,000th goal is a matter of months, not seasons.
The Moneyball verdict
The numbers say he gets there this season. His goals match his chances, so the countdown rests on the most dependable kind of scoring. Whatever the date, it will be the first time anyone has reached the number, and on this evidence it is when, not if.
- Expected goals (xG): the quality of every chance, so a team is judged on what it created and allowed, not only on what went in.
- Finishing and goalkeeping regression: goals against xG at both ends. A big gap either way rarely lasts a season.
- Poisson projection: his league goal rate, and his xG rate, as a Poisson process over the matches left, giving the chance of the goals still needed.
- Matches needed: the goals still needed over his goals per match and over his xG per match.
- League scorers: his place among the league's scorers this season.
- Expected points: each match's xG run through a Dixon-Coles score matrix (the Poisson model with the low-score correction the Match Board uses) to give the points a performance usually earns.
- Pi-ratings: a rating for every club at home and away, moved after each result by how far the goal margin beat or missed what the ratings expected.
- Moneyball Score (Scouting Players Research): every figure his role needs, as a percentile against centre-forwards across 16 leagues, with his league read at its level.
- Moneyball Value and age curve: a market value from score, age, league and minutes, and the score projected along the age curve.
