Mbappé steals the Ballon d'Or show: a brace in El Clásico, read with every Moneyball method
By Moneyball Editorial · published

Barcelona 1-2 Real Madrid (La Liga, 25 October 2026, Spotify Camp Nou). Kylian Mbappé scored both of Madrid's goals, at 41′ and 87′, and finished the night with a match rating of 8.2, the best on the pitch. With the Ballon d'Or conversation never far from his name, he chose the biggest stage in Spain to make his case.
A brace in a Clásico is the kind of moment that writes its own headline. Moneyball's job is to ask the second question: how much of it was the player, how much was the night, and what it says about the season. So this piece reads Mbappé three ways: the two goals and the chances behind them, his season against Europe's best forwards, and the Ballon d'Or race on numbers rather than reputations.
The two goals
41′, 1–0. The plan in miniature. Madrid broke, Bernardo Silva found Yan Diomande on the left, Barcelona did not get two players to him, and the cross deflected off Gerard Martín into Mbappé's path. He beat Joan García from close range. Lucky in the deflection, not in the situation: Mourinho's Madrid waited all night for exactly this moment, a ball won and Barcelona's high line caught open.
87′, 1–2. After Raphinha's equaliser, Barcelona pushed for the win and left the space behind them again. Eduardo Camavinga, on as a substitute, drove into the box past Pau Cubarsí and pulled the ball back, and Mbappé finished into an empty net. The striker's art is often not the finish but the run that makes it easy: he was the one Madrid player who had kept himself free for the moment the ball came across.
| His Clásico | Figure |
|---|---|
| Minutes | 90 |
| Goals | 2 |
| Assists | 0 |
| Shots | 3 |
| Shots on target | 2 |
| Expected goals (xG) | 1.03 |
| Goals minus xG | +0.97 |
| Match rating (Sportmonks) | 8.2 |
Two goals from 1.03 expected goals and 3 shots. He scored more than his chances usually give, which is what a match-winner does on a big night: both goals came from positions he chose, not from a flood of opportunities.
What his chances were worth to Madrid
Our Match Board turns two xG figures into the chance of each result through a Dixon-Coles score matrix. Run the Clásico's xG (1.55 for Barcelona, 1.45 for Madrid) through it and a match played like this one ends in a Madrid win 35% of the time, worth 1.31 expected points. Take out Mbappé's 1.03 xG and the same match gives Madrid a win only 9% of the time, 0.54 expected points. His chances alone were worth +0.77 expected points on the night, before a single one went in.
The season behind the night
| Season 2026/27 | Matches | Minutes | Goals | Assists | xG | Goals − xG | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| La Liga | 10 | 894 | 11 | 2 | 9.91 | +1.1 | 7.89 |
| Champions League | 3 | 268 | 3 | 1 | 1.29 | +1.7 | 7.61 |
| Both | 13 | 1162 | 14 | 3 | 11.20 | +2.8 | 7.83 |
Across La Liga and the Champions League Mbappé has 14 goals from 11.20 expected goals in 1162 minutes: 1.08 goals per 90. He is finishing above his chances. Our regression method watches that gap, because even the best rarely hold it for a whole season; what does hold is the volume of chances, and that is where he is elite. In La Liga he has scored 44% of Madrid's goals.

The Ballon d'Or race, on numbers
The Ballon d'Or is decided by votes, and votes follow moments like this one. Moneyball's index leaves the moments out and keeps the numbers: match rating, goals and assists per 90, xG per 90 and minutes, each scored against the field.
| # | Player | Club | Index | Rating | G+A per 90 | xG per 90 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Raphinha | FC Barcelona | 98.9 | 8.23 | 2.05 | 1.04 |
| 2 | Lamine Yamal | FC Barcelona | 98.8 | 8.45 | 1.63 | 0.62 |
| 3 | Kylian Mbappé | Real Madrid | 98.7 | 7.83 | 1.32 | 0.87 |
| 4 | Harry Kane | FC Bayern München | 98.6 | 7.87 | 1.68 | 0.96 |
| 5 | Erling Haaland | Manchester City | 97.6 | 7.60 | 1.31 | 0.78 |
| 6 | Florian Thauvin | Lens | 96.8 | 8.01 | 1.29 | 0.46 |
| 7 | Donyell Malen | Roma | 96.7 | 7.62 | 1.63 | 0.94 |
| 8 | Michael Olise | FC Bayern München | 95.7 | 8.38 | 1.47 | 0.43 |
| 9 | Lassine Sinayoko | Paris | 95.4 | 7.73 | 1.28 | 0.68 |
| 10 | Nico Paz | Como | 93.1 | 8.00 | 0.98 | 0.36 |
On the numbers Mbappé is 3rd, behind Raphinha, Lamine Yamal. A brace in the Clásico is the kind of night that moves votes, but the index is a reminder that the race is a season long.
Madrid around him
The win took Madrid to 24 points (3rd), Barcelona are on 27 (1st). On expected points Madrid's season is worth 19.0, and the shrunk-strength projection has them on course for about 72 points (2nd). The numbers still have work for them to do. A striker scoring at this rate is the surest way a strong side turns its chances into points.
The Moneyball view
Big nights decide awards, but seasons decide teams. Mbappé's Clásico was both: two goals from the positions a great striker takes, in a plan built to give him exactly those positions. If there is a caution in the numbers, it is that he is finishing above his chances; the chances themselves are the part that lasts, and they are elite. Whatever the voters decide, on the evidence of the Camp Nou and the index he is playing like the best forward in the world.
- Expected goals (xG): the quality of every chance, so a team is judged on what it created and allowed, not only on what went in.
- Dixon-Coles score matrix: the match's xG turned into the chance of each result and into expected points, with and without his chances.
- Expected points: each match's xG run through a Dixon-Coles score matrix (the Poisson model with the low-score correction the Match Board uses) to give the points a performance usually earns.
- Finishing and goalkeeping regression: goals against xG at both ends. A big gap either way rarely lasts a season.
- Percentiles: his figures per 90 minutes against every forward with 450 minutes in the five leagues and the Champions League.
- Moneyball Ballon d'Or Index: rating 35%, goals and assists per 90 35%, xG per 90 20%, minutes 10%, each a percentile against the field.
- Form check: this season against the last, per 90 minutes, with any change of 15% or more marked.
- Projection: the shrunk strength played out against an average opponent for every match left, added to the points already won.
- Bayesian shrinkage: a club's xG margin is pulled toward the league average as if it had 8 average matches more, so a hot month is not mistaken for a new level.
